EdgeGuard FAQ's

Product Overview
EdgeGuard is an in-cab awareness and alert system for airfield vehicles including snow removal equipment and mowers. It combines precise GPS positioning with an airfield hazard map to give operators real-time proximity warnings before conflicts with edge lights or runway boundaries occur. No new ground infrastructure is required.

How It Works
EdgeGuard tracks the vehicle's GPS position in real time and compares it against a pre-loaded map of airfield hazards including edge light locations and runway centerline geometry. When the vehicle approaches a hazard, the system triggers audible and visual alerts in the cab. Alert intensity scales with proximity, giving operators intuitive, eyes-up awareness without requiring them to watch a screen continuously.
The hazard map is tailored to each customer's airfield and provided by Illuminex AI prior to deployment.

Supported Vehicles and Use Cases
Plow: Monitors the full plow blade width plus an adjustable lateral buffer on each side. Audible and visual alerts escalate as the plow approaches edge lights, with beep frequency increasing as distance decreases.

Blower: A speed-based lookahead zone (adjustable, default 5 seconds) projects the vehicle's forward alert area dynamically. Audible and visual alerts escalate as the blower approaches each edge light. Allows operators to clear snow between buried edge lights without striking them, leaving only the immediate area around each light for a cyclone blower or other equipment to clear safely.

Mower: Monitors mower distance from runway centerlines. Provides a single audible and visual alert when the vehicle reaches the adjustable standoff threshold (e.g. 200ft from runway centerline). The standoff distance is adjustable to match airport-specific requirements.

Hardware
EdgeGuard is a self-contained kit supplied by Illuminex AI, consisting of:

  • Panasonic Toughbook tablet (in-cab display and processing)

  • Quality GPS antenna with bracket for vehicle roof or other convenient mounting location, with cable routed into the cab

  • All cabling

GPS accuracy options:

  • Standard: 1-2m horizontal accuracy

  • High accuracy: RTK corrections supported via NTRIP or customer-supplied local base station, for applications requiring sub-meter positioning.

A tablet mount is required in the cab. A standard mount option is available through Illuminex AI, or the airport can provide their own.

Airfield Map Setup
Illuminex AI configures the airfield hazard map for each deployment. The customer provides airfield geometry data in any standard vector or georeferenced format (DXF, DWG, GeoTIFF, etc.). Illuminex AI handles all map preparation. For mower applications, the customer also provides the required standoff distance from the runway centerline.

Connectivity and Infrastructure Requirements
EdgeGuard requires a cellular data connection (4G/5G). A SIM or eSIM is provided by Illuminex AI as part of the deployment. Cellular connectivity enables remote support, system updates, and cloud data transfer.
The system is resilient to network outages. Core alert functionality operates without an active cellular connection.
No additional ground infrastructure is required.

Deployment and Installation
EdgeGuard is installed by Illuminex AI. Installation takes a few hours per vehicle, followed by field commissioning and operator training. No changes to existing snow removal procedures are required.
EdgeGuard is currently available for early access via our beta program. Airports interested in deployment are encouraged to contact us directly.

Support and Maintenance
Standard support is provided by phone and email during business hours. Illuminex AI can remotely access the system for troubleshooting, configuration updates, and software updates.
